Speaking is a crucial skill in English language learning, yet many students struggle due to limited vocabulary, difficulties in constructing sentences, and pronunciation issues. Psychological barriers such as lack of confidence, fear of making mistakes, and low motivation further hinder their speaking abilities. Using a descriptive qualitative design, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 37 Grade 11 students and interviews with 5 selected participants from SMAN 1 Tarakan. The findings reveal that students’ difficulties are multifaceted, encompassing linguistic issues and deeper psychological concerns, compounded by a lack of early exposure to English and disinterest in the subject. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic approach involving targeted practice, a supportive learning environment, bridging programs, and engaging teaching strategies to enhance students’ speaking skills and motivation in learning English.
2025-02-27T05:05:35+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Cahyo Budi Sampurnohttp://jurnal.borneo.ac.id/index.php/jele/article/view/6161THE EFFECT OF USING NARRATIVE TEXT ON LEARNING OUTCOMES OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 7 TARAKAN2025-02-27T05:05:23+08:00Agnesi Ranggaagnesirangga31@gmail.comSyarifa Rafiqarafiqa@borneo.ac.idNurdiana Nurdiananurdiana.roswan@gmail.com
The purpose of this study was to determine how the use of narrative texts affects the learning outcomes of eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 7 Tarakan. This study used a qualitative approach. Students from grades VIII-9 were used as the experimental group, VIII-7 and VIII-8 were used as the control group. Observation, interviews, documentation, and learning tests were the methods used to obtain data. The results showed that, compared to the control group, students who used narrative texts had better reading and writing skills. The narrative text-based approach motivated students to be more active in learning and better understand their culture. The theories of constructivism and experiential learning were supported by this study. To improve the quality of English learning, it is recommended that narrative texts be included more in the curriculum.

Keywords: Narrative text, learninng outcomes
2025-02-27T05:05:35+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 agnesi ranggahttp://jurnal.borneo.ac.id/index.php/jele/article/view/6157Analysis of School Culture and Governance at SMPN 7 Tarakan: Practices, Habits, and Management2025-02-27T05:05:23+08:00Sarah Ibrahimsarahibrahim726@gmail.comSyarifa Rafiqarafiqa@borneo.ac.idAsmauliah Asmauliahsarahibrahim726@gmail.comThis research analyses school culture and governance in SMPN 7 Tarakan and the practices, habits, and management that create a conducive learning atmosphere. It underlines the importance of school policies, engagement in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, a healthy learning environment, and facilities management for students to be engaged and succeed academically. Adopting a qualitative approach based on observational data, the authors establish a link between orderly school rules and disciplinary and structural order but suggest that ethnically diverse communities may benefit from looser structures. The study emphasises the need for sufficient facilities to boost student motivation and engagement in academic and extra-curricular activities. In conclusion, this study offers a possibility to view the school within quality education and students' personal growth by having an integrative perspective — defining a concept of doing justice for educational quality.

2025-02-27T05:05:35+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Sarah Ibrahimhttp://jurnal.borneo.ac.id/index.php/jele/article/view/6345IMPROVING READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT THROUGH P-Q-R-S-T STRATEGY AT ELEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 2 TARAKAN2025-02-27T05:05:23+08:00Sherly Pebriani Bidsherlypebrianibid26@gmail.comWinarno Winarnowinarnovisit@gmail.com
The purpose of the research was to improve students’ reading comprehension of narrative text through the Preview-Question-Read-Summarize-Test (PQRST) strategy. The research method used was classroom action research. The subjects of this research were students of class XI B SMA Negeri 2 Tarakan in the 2023/2024 academic year which consists of 36 students. There were two cycles in this research. Each cycle
consists of two meetings which include planning, action, observation, and reflection. The instruments used to collect data are tests and observations. In the first cycle, there were 24 students who reached the Learning Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP) with a percentage of (67%) and 12 students (33%) had not yet reached KKTP. In the second cycle, there were 30 students (84%) who had achieved KKTP and there were 6 students (16%) who did not achieve KKTP. The observation results of teacher and students also improved. The results of teacher observation in the first cycle obtained an average score of 77.5% and increased to 87.5% in the second cycle. It is concluded that the use of the PQRST strategy can enhance students’ reading comprehension of narrative text in class XI B SMA Negeri 2 Tarakan during the
2023/2024 academic year. The results of the research suggest that teachers may consider employing the PQRST strategy in teaching, especially teaching reading comprehension.

Keywords: Classroom Action Research, Reading Comprehension, PQRST
2025-02-27T05:05:35+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Sherly Pebriani Bid, Winarno Winarnohttp://jurnal.borneo.ac.id/index.php/jele/article/view/5903STUDENTS’ AND ENGLISH TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION TOWARD THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MERDEKA BELAJAR CURRICULUM AT 10th GRADE OF SMK NEGERI 1 MAJENE2025-02-27T05:05:23+08:00Nurlailah Nurlailahnurlailah694@gmail.comSyamsinar Syamsinarsyamsinar@stainmajene.ac.idRabiatul Adawiahrabiatuladawiah@stainmajene.ac.id
The research problem for this research is how students’ and English teachers’ perception toward the implementation of Merdeka Belajar curriculum. The purpose of this research is to determine the perception of students and English teachers towards the implementation of Merdeka Belajar among vocational high school. Therefore, in teaching reading comprehension, an interesting teaching strategy such as KWL strategy is needed. The purpose of this study is to find out the significant effect of KWL strategy implementation on descriptive reading comprehension of junior high school 7th grade students. The research method used was pre-experiment method. The population of this study were seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan with a sample of class VII-10 as many as 29 students. The research instruments used were multiple choice and true-false tests in the form of pre-test and post-test. In addition, the results of the data analysis obtained were processed using the SPSS version 25.0 program. The results of data analysis showed that the average pre-test result was 57.44 and the average post-test score was 78.89. The Shapiro Wilk Test result of 0.965 is higher than 0.05, which means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that teaching descriptive text using KWL strategy is proven effective in improving reading comprehension of grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan.

Keywords: KWL Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text
2025-02-27T05:05:35+08:00Copyright (c) 2025 Astiar Astiar, Romlah Ulfaikahttp://jurnal.borneo.ac.id/index.php/jele/article/view/6348COMPARING THE LISTENING SKILLS OF THE 2013 CURRICULUM AND MERDEKA CURRICULUM OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 1 MALINAU AND SMAN 3 MALINAU2025-02-27T05:05:23+08:00Reni Tampang Daturenitampang@gmail.comRidwan Ridwanridwan.fkipubt@gmail.comThis study aimed to determine whether there was a significant difference in the listening skills of eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Malinau, which used the 2013 Curriculum, compared to those at SMAN 3 Malinau, which adopted the Merdeka Curriculum. A causal-comparative research design was employed, with a sample size of 100 students selected using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments included listening tests and interviews, in which the listening test questions were adapted from Collins' TOEIC listening skills. Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, the Mann-Whitney test was utilized to determine the differences between the groups. The results revealed a significant difference in the listening skills between the two groups. The mean score for students at SMAN 1 Malinau, which implemented the 2013 Curriculum, was 241, placing them at the B1 Intermediate level according to the CEFR levels. In contrast, students at SMAN 3 Malinau, who learned English under the Merdeka Curriculum, had a mean score of 185.4, also within the B1 Intermediate level but notably lower. The Mann-Whitney test results showed a p value of 0.001, which was less than the significance level of 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference. Furthermore, the effect size was calculated at 0.3339, indicating a medium level difference between the groups. This disparity in listening skills could be attributed to differences in the learning systems, with the 2013 Curriculum being more systematic, compared to the Merdeka Curriculum being more flexible.
